Manchester United-linked striker gets another shot at ending goal drought

Cavani

Edinson Cavani will be the main striker for PSG today as they take on Nice at the Allianz Riviera

After the disappointing 3-1 loss to Barcelona on Wednesday night, Paris Saint-Germain face a tricky test on Saturday as they travel south to the French Riviera to take on OGC Nice.

Without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, due to suspension, the spotlight falls on Edinson Cavani. There are rumours he is Juventus bound this week, but that hasn’t stopped the Daily Mirror linking the striker with a move to Manchester United. If he wants to widen his options and show clubs he is still worth the bother, he needs to step up and guide PSG to victory today.

His performance against Barcelona was instantly forgettable and taking away his late double in the Coupe de la Ligue final – against 10-men Bastia – he has gone over 600 minutes without a goal in the league.

After Lyon dispatched Bastia 2-0 on Wednesday, PSG need the victory to go back ahead of Les Gones in top spot before the Derby du Rhone on Sunday night.

Cavani has only scored eight goals in 28 appearances this season, failing to build on the 15 league goals he scored in his first year.

Juventus are rumored to be offering €45 million this summer, and that could be enough to see PSG wash their hands of the striker. It is less than what Manchester United had agreed to pay for Radamel Falcao, if they wanted to make his loan deal permanent.

Cavani has claimed he wants to stay in Paris this summer, but that may not be his decision if the club decides they want to cash-in.

With Falcao unlikely to stay at Old Trafford, Manchester United are in the market for a striker, it is now up to Cavani to prove he is worth the substantial outlay this summer.
