Papy Djilobodji was superb on Friday night as Nantes beat Marseille 1-0.
On Friday night, Marcelo Bielsa’s Marseille travelled north-west to the Stade du Beaujoire to take on FC Nantes. OM had to win, but the centre-back linked by Mercato365 in France with a move to Celtic this summer was at his absolute best to keep a clean sheet and help his side to a 1-0 success.
Marseille had to win to keep pace in the race for the Champions League places, but Nantes hadn’t read the script. After 20 minutes the home side scored the only goal of the game as Serge Gakpe took advantage of Rod Fanni’s awful back pass and tucked the chance past Steve Mandanda.
Nantes were excellent throughout the game and defended superbly from front to back. When Bielsa’s side did find a way through, Papy Djilobodji was there to deny the away side any way through.
According to WhoScored, the 26-year-old was everywhere, making 11 clearances, two interceptions and two tackles. Only right-back Issa Cissokho made half as many clearances as Djilobodji on the night.
It was a monstrous performance from the Senegalese defender, and if there were scouts from the Scottish champions or the Premier League in Nantes on Friday, they would have been impressed by his display.
Djilobodji’s contract is up in the summer of 2016, so Nantes may be willing to sell now rather than risk losing him on a free next season. It has been reported that a bid of around €5 million could be enough to prise him away from Les Canaris.
