The Saints have conceded just 22 goals in their 32 Premier League games to date, meaning they have let in fewer goals than any other team in the top-flight.
It is an indication of how well organised Southampton have been this season, but Alderweireld suggests that it is not just the defence that should be credited for the record.
“It’s nice for a defender and all the defenders to be the best defence in the Premier League, but it’s not only us,” the Belgian defender said. “It’s the midfielders too, the whole team is doing everything to stop the opponent.
Southampton have a particularly strong midfield axis to build around, with Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama normally acting as shields for the defence.
The midfield pair are two of the strongest in England, and Alderweireld is right to recognise their contribution to the team.
Wanyama offers pace, power and physicality to the Southampton side, while Schneiderlin is more of a calming presence that can dictate the pace of games.
The duo have worked impressively in tandem and will hope to continue to offer good protection to Southampton's defence for the remainder of the campaign.
Koeman's side have a vital set of fixtures to come as they look to close the gap on the top-four, and the side's defensive performances are likely to be crucial.
