Jan Molby believes Sherwood has improved one key player at Aston Villa.
Sherwood has overseen an impressive resurrection of Villa since his appointment, and Molby has told the Liverpool Echo he has had one big achievement in his short reign in charge.
“Sherwood's biggest achievement so far has been getting one of the better strikers in the Premier League going again,” the ex-Danish international said. “Christian Benteke missed a lot of the season through injury and struggled on his return. But now he looks motivated and the goals are flowing.”
It is certainly very apparent that Benteke’s form has enjoyed a massive peak since Sherwood’s arrival at Villa Park, with the 24-year-old Belgian forward reaching the same kind of ability that he showed during his debut season in the Premier League.
It was that first season, of 2012/13, when Benteke burst onto the scene, netting 19 goals in 34 games for Paul Lambert’s men. He has never recaptured that style, but after recovering from a number of injuries, he looks close to it once again.
In Sherwood’s much more attacking system, Benteke has netted eight goals in his last six games, scoring in all but one of them. He got a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw with QPR, and his return to form has made Villa a much more threatening prospect for Liverpool in this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.
The forward will need to keep hitting the back of the net if Villa are to retain their Premier League status, but right now, it does not look like he will have any trouble in keeping up his impressive form for the remainder of the campaign.
