Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has told the club’s official website that Scott Sinclair and Ashley Westwood are both fit and in contention for Sunday afternoon’s FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
Neither Sinclair not Westwood have featured since last month’s 1-0 home defeat to Swansea but both are now set to give Villa a much-needed boost for the weekend, with several other first-teamers either ruled out or serious doubts.
Gabriel Agbonlahor is facing a late fitness test ahead of the clash after being forced off in the 70th-minute of last weekend’s 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur, while Ciaran Clark won’t be available after injuring his medial ligament in the first-half of the same match.
Alan Hutton is also out with an ankle problem and Carlos Sanchez will be serving a suspension, having been sent off in the closing stages of the win over Tottenham for a poor challenge which earned him his second booking.
"Ciaran came off at Tottenham with a bad medial ligament injury. He's not going to be fit,” said Sherwood. "We're going to give Gabby right up until the last possible moment an opportunity to be fit.
"Scott is back. So it's not bad but pretty similar in that some of them haven't done a lot of training. We'll have to see how fit they are physically rather than medically.
"There are a few more training which helps. Gabby's touch and go. It's a hamstring injury. He felt tightness in it.
"It wasn't a pull so we've been treating it and assessing him every day. It's looking like he's going to be very close."
Villa have lost their past six FA Cup meetings with Liverpool without scoring a single goal but can take inspiration from a 1-0 win at Anfield earlier in the season, when the now-departed Paul Lambert’s side shocked the Reds through Agbonlahor’s first-half strike.
Having the long-serving striker available alongside the in-form Christian Benteke at Wembley Stadium would be huge boost to their chances of causing an upset but it looks like we won’t know his status until right before kick-off.
