Could boyhood club steal Newcastle-linked coach?

Christophe Galtier has been linked with the Newcastle United job, but a move to Marseille would be hard to resist.

It is expected to be a huge summer at Newcastle United. Recent results have suggested that John Carver is not quite up to the job, so it seems set that a new head coach will be appointed after the season’s end.

However, one of their potential targets could be stolen from under Newcastle’s noses. Christophe Galtier has been linked with the St James’ Park job by the Chronicle after the excellent work he has done at Saint-Etienne over the last few years.

This season, once again Les Verts are on the edge of qualifying for the Europa League, just missing out on the Champions League. If Galtier was to somehow find a way to finish third – they are only two points behind Monaco with six games to go – perhaps he could be convinced to stay another year at the Rhone-Alpes club.

Failure to finish in the top three would likely see Galtier move on this summer and as tempting a move it would be to Newcastle, there is one move that would be bigger for the Frenchman.

Born in Marseille, the 48-year-old coach made over 100 appearances for the club and would be an excellent replacement for Marcelo Bielsa if the Argentine coach leaves his post.

Rather than Claudio Ranieri, Galtier would be the fans’ choice to take over. They love having one of their own in charge of their club as they feel only then does the coach understand the importance and pressures that come with the club – something Newcastle United fans will appreciate.

Galtier would be a great option for the Magpies, but it would be very hard for the hometown boy to turn down the advances of his boyhood club were they to make a move.
