The Daily Mirror has suggested that Carles Gil has been overlooked by Tim Sherwood because the new Aston Villa manager feels he is too lightweight.
Gil is not noted for his physicality and Sherwood seemingly believes that his inability to impose himself on the opposition means that he isn't capable of playing a key role in the Premier League.
It means that the Spaniard is likely to be encouraged to work on his strength in the gym, with Sherwood preferring other options for now.
Should Sherwood give Gil a chance?
It is hard to have a complaint about Sherwood's management of Villa due to the success he has already had at the club, but Gil's absence is one of the only concerns.
The diminutive attacking midfielder looked to have the potential to light up Villa Park, but he is now in danger of being ostracised.
Gil is blessed with wonderful technical ability and he would bring a new dimension to Villa's attack, which is formed around pace at the moment, if he was added to the team.
It means that Sherwood may be wise to consider him in the future, despite his physical limitations, and Villa supporters are likely to be hoping that Gil can manage to convince his new manager to give him a starting role in training.
