John Carver has told the Shields Gazette that the return of Siem de Jong should improve his side's performances.
De Jong has missed almost the whole season after a succession of injury problems, but the Dutch international appears to be edging closer to fitness now.
There are hopes that he could be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend and Carver feels that his inclusion will help the side considerably.
“He’s a top player – creative and goalscoring – and we need one of those in the team,” the Newcastle boss said. “Fingers crossed, he might be coming back at the right time.”
Newcastle certainly have lacked a composed presence in their team over recent weeks and they will be hoping that De Jong's return can give them the quality that they are so desperately lacking.
There are now concerns that they could fall into a relegation fight, meaning that they need to find a win from somewhere to appease fans' fears.
If De Jong can help inspire them back to winning ways it would be a welcome boost and his return could finally provide supporters some positivity in what has been a very worrying spell for the club.
