Newcastle United manager John Carver has made a bold prediction in the Northern Echo over what the club could be capable of if the board follows through on assurances they’ve given him.
Carver has explained that he’s been told Newcastle will invest strongly in the team and he’s spelled out what it means for the club’s fans in no uncertain terms.
“They have to invest in the team. And I have had assurances they are going to,” said Carver.
“If we invest right why can't we go after European spots, Champions League spots why not? Look at Southampton, they lost so many players and had to replace them. They've done a great job this year.”
The first major decision Newcastle will have to make after this season and before any new players come in, is whether Carver is the man who will be in charge of the club next season.
Until the club have made an appointment over the long term managerial position, it’s impossible to predict what sort of players could come into the playing squad to strengthen areas, which need extra bodies.
There are plenty of fans at the moment who won’t want that man to be Carver and a new boss coming to the club may have different idea and expectations over the sort of funding he wants from the club’s high ranking officials.
If the club make the right decisions then European football by the end of the next campaign is possible.
Newcastle have an infrastructure, which is well suited to dealing with the challenge of Europe and it’s something they have dealt well with in the past.
However, an awful lot of work and some big decisions have to be made before that’s a realistic possibility.
