Remy Cabella has assured Newcastle fans that the players are not already on holiday.
“We are certainly not on our holiday,” Cabella said. “We are professionals and we don’t think about holidays - that’s impossible. We are working on the training ground, there are no thoughts about holidays. That’s unprofessional.”
Whilst this kind of attitude is what Newcastle fans would want to see, with the club looking to survive in the top flight, it is really worrying considering the quality of recent performances.
Five straight defeats have set the Tyneside club crashing down the Premier League table, and if that is the kind of form that Newcastle are displaying when staying focused on games, then it should be a worry.
There have arguably only been a good 45 minutes of football across those five games - in the second half of the defeat to Arsenal - and it is hard to imagine how they could possibly get any worse even if the players were thinking of their holidays.
Admittedly, injuries and suspensions have not helped the club - and Moussa Sissoko’s recent sending off means another absent star - but John Carver has done little to inspire greatness into his players, and their supposed focused mentality does not bode well for next season.
Honestly, it would be better for Cabella to admit that the Newcastle players are not focused, as then there is a reason for the downturn in form. If he is truthful about the fact that the the players are not thinking about their holidays, well, then there is a lot to be worried about at St James’ Park.
