This week the Bundesliga YouTube channel took us back to a game that ranks as Per Mertesacker’s worst ever - when Werder Bremen lost 6-3 to Stuttgart
Per Mertesacker has starred in his fair share of stinkers for Arsenal since moving to the Emirates in 2011, but few compare to one particular performance during his younger years in the Bundesliga.
Signed from Werder Bremen for an estimated £9.94 million, according to Transfermarkt, the World Cup winner has largely fared well in the Premier League to date for the Gunners, with nearly 120 top-flight appearances to his name.
But there have also been the occasional blips for the 30-year-old, with Arsenal’s recent Champions League capitulation at the hands of AS Monaco a particular low-light.
But if any Gooners were under the illusion that that performance against the principality club ranked as his worst, they can think again.
Published on the Bundesliga’s official YouTube channel, a video has emerged this week offering highlights of arguably Mertesacker’s darkest hour.
Turning out for Bremen at the time, the German defender was part of a team on the wrong and of a 6-3 drubbing at the hands of Stuttgart.
Played way back in the 2007/08 campaign, the game is notable for featuring a hat-trick from none other than Mario Gomez, who was a popular fixture in the Swabians' starting line-up prior to his move to Bayern Munich.
For Arsenal fans, however, the focus must surely be Mertesacker, who failed miserably to stop Gomez and his Stuttgart cohorts putting Bremen to the sword.
Not only was he at fault for several goals, but the German stopper also compounded matters by scoring an own goal and getting himself sent off.
So sit back and enjoy, if you can, Mertesacker’s worst ever performance.
