The Frenchman's performance in Real Madrid's Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid has been widely praised.
Raphael Varane’s performance for Real Madrid on Tuesday night garnered attention from far and wide, and rightly so.
The youngster put in a stellar performance against rivals Atletico Madrid, helping his side to clean sheet and limiting the opposition to a few unsuccessful attempts on Iker Casillas’ goal.
That is likely to have caught the eye of keen admirer Jose Mourinho, who the Daily Mail last month said was making the defender his number one transfer target for the summer.
A look at Varane’s stats from last night’s game show why that interest is likely to have gone up another notch.
First and foremost he made 16 clearances throughout the game, while he also managed three interceptions and three blocks.
He also came out on top in the duels category having won seven aerial battles up against intimidating Atletico forward Mario Mandzukic.
Of course modern day defenders are also expected to be good on the ball as well, and Varane didn’t disappoint in that regard either. For instance, he enjoyed a 91% passing accuracy throughout the game, just behind the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos but better than the entire Atletico team.
So then, a performance of the highest quality from the Real Madrid star and one that will definitely have made Mourinho stand up and take note. Whether the Spanish giants would be willing to sell their prize asset, however, is another matter entirely.
