Newcastle United manager John Carver has warned his squad that they must ensure their Premier League status is secured before a final day match against West Ham United.
Newcastle are currently nine points above the relegation zone, but Carver admits that they are not out of trouble yet.
The Magpies have been in woeful form of late, and Carver is fearful that his side could find themselves in the thick of a basement battle if they are not careful.
“I have enough belief in the lads in the dressing room. If I see anything near to what we saw at Liverpool, we won’t have a problem," the Chronicle report Carver said at his press conference earlier today.
“But we need to get the points. The fact of the matter is when we go into that last game against West Ham we don’t want to be fighting for three points.”
Newcastle had looked to be heading towards a comfortable mid-table finish, but since Carver has taken charge their form has dipped alarmingly.
The North East outfit have won just two of the 14 games Carver has overseen and unless their performances dramatically improve, then they could fall into trouble.
Thankfully, relegation remains an outside possibility, with one more win surely all it will take for Newcastle to feel assured of top-flight football again next season.
The longer that their current run of defeats goes on for, though, the more concerned supporters will be, and Carver is right to be stressing the importance of his side getting back on track as soon as possible.
