The Dutchman has explained his minimal European football experience.
Aston Villa have a real battle on their sides when it comes to keeping hold of one of their star players this summer.
Ron Vlaar had an excellent World Cup last summer and that has seen him linked with moves to several big clubs across Europe.
He is out of contract in the summer and it could be he decides this is the perfect time to move on after a difficult season with injuries.
The Dutchman has now been speaking to Soccer Vision, his representatives, via their official website, and made it clear he would like another shot at European football.
"I've hardly played European matches. Yes, with AZ in the UEFA Cup, the semi-final against Sporting Lisbon, but when I was so young, inexperienced boy of 20, I had no idea what was happening."
Of course Villa could end up giving Vlaar a chance of Europa League football next term. They are in the FA Cup semi-finals, where they face Liverpool. If they go on to win the competition, or finish runners-up to Arsenal, they will be in Europe next term.
But some of the teams that are being linked with his signature would like to offer him a stab at Champions League football, something Villa certainly cannot offer next term.
