Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to play in same team at all-star game?

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have stated that UEFA are planning a North vs South all-star fixture.

For many football purists, having the world’s two best players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same team is the ultimate dream.

However, with these perennial personal rivals representing contrasting sides of the El Clasico divide, the likelihood of them ever playing together seems very slim.

That said, the prospect may well be getting closer, with Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo today revealing that the pair could line-up on the same team in a UEFA all-star clash.

The European governing body are supposedly weighing up the merits of a North vs South all-star exhibition game, similar to the equivalent East vs West in NBA basketball.

The North team would comprise of the best players from Northern European leagues such as the Premier League, Bundesliga and potentially the Russian Premier League, with the South made up of La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

The Spanish media source states that the game could well take place in 2017, by which time Ronaldo would be 32 and Messi 30.

MD opted to run the story on Tuesday’s front page, with fans sure to be licking their lips in anticipation of the potential sight of the Ballon d’Or rivals on the same team.

The Spaniards also picked their theoretical North and South teams, with some interesting inclusions.

The North team featured six Premier League players: John Terry, David Silva, Angel Di Maria, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez.

The South team meanwhile had the likes of Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba in it.

The report concludes by stating that some of Europe’s biggest clubs have already been consulted about the idea, but the planning was still in the early stages.
