Jonny Howson says Leeds United must keep Neil Redfearn

Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson says Neil Redfearn must stay as Leeds United boss.

Norwich City star Jonny Howson has praised his former side, telling BBC Radio Leeds he believes they can continue to improve if they stick together.

The central midfielder scored the opening goal in Norwich's 2-0 win at Elland Road, to keep the Canaries on track for automatic promotion.

He gave his thoughts after the game on the current state of Leeds, and said he feels keeping head coach Neil Redfearn will be essential to the club moving forward.

He said: "Looking at the club from the outside, there's a lot of potential in the side, some of these lads coming through, they've got a great man in charge I know, for me there's no better guy for bringing these young lads through.

"Potential wise if they can stick together for the next couple of seasons, they have got a good chance (of promotion).

"I hope they do, I still look out for the Leeds results and see how they are doing. He knows the club inside out he can develop them, he's going to be key if they keep them together."

Howson is himself within touching distance of the Premier League, with his Norwich side in the second automatic promotion spot with three games to go.

As a former Leeds captain he knows all about the ups and downs on and off the field at Elland Road, and had it not been for the club's poor financial situation in recent years, he could still be playing for the club.

Leeds cannot afford to let more of their young talent depart, as Howson suggests could happen if Redfearn is allowed to leave, for as he showed last night, it is likely to be a decision which will come back and haunt them in years to come.
