After his header helped Paris Saint-Germain beat Chelsea in the last round of the Champions League, Laurent Blanc has surprised everyone by naming David Luiz in his squad for Wednesday night’s game against FC Barcelona.
Injured against Marseille, the Brazilian was supposed to miss at least four weeks of action, including the two games against Barcelona. Whether it is mind games from Blanc, or he is merely filling a spot in the squad, it seems a strange decision from the PSG coach if he is not 100% fit.
It is also very questionable that someone who was ruled out for four weeks would be fit and able after no more than 10 days out.
In the lead up to the game, there had been speculation that Thiago Motta, also injured against Marseille, would be named fit ahead of the game, no one predicted that Luiz would be included.
If the Brazilian is not at full fitness, it would be a huge risk for Blanc to use him against Barcelona. Not just as they try to stop the Spanish side from scoring, but with the important games PSG have coming up in a number of competitions.
It would be a disaster if Luiz was to come back too early and risk missing subsequent weeks, especially with the title race so evenly balanced.
It will remain to be seen if Luiz makes an appearance on Wednesday, or if he is on the bench for the league game at the weekend. It is well know that Brazilians are religious, but all his prayers will have come true if he has shaken off a thigh injury in time for Wednesday’s match.
