Report: Arsenal-linked Federico Valverde targeted by Real Madrid

Uruguay Players

Arsenal are reportedly in the race to sign Federico Valverde.

As per TMW, the Gunners were preparing an offer for the 16-year-old attacking midfielder last month, with a €2.5 million price tag claimed.

Currently plying his trade with Penarol in his homeland of Uruguay, the talented right-footed Under-17 youth international has previously been on trial in North London, and the Gunners are clearly keen to add him to their ranks.

Their interest has been long-standing in the youngster, but a new report by TMW claims they have been overtaken in the race for Valverde’s signature by La Liga and European giants Real Madrid, who have optioned him as a potential signing.

Barcelona are also named in the report, and with both clubs able to easily match the €2.5m fee laid down by Arsenal, it appears it will be a straight three-way fight for his signature.

However, the Gunners may have an advantage when looking to sign Valverde, due to their history of youth promotion. Madrid currently have little history of making an effort to promote from within their own ranks, and at the age of just 16 Valverde will definitely be heading to their youth team.

Barcelona do also fulfil this role of promoting youth from within, but they are currently under a transfer embargo, and the Gunners could swoop in this summer to sign Valverde ahead of the Catalan club.
