Manchester United have become favourites to sign Burnley forward Danny Ings in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The player’s contract is set to expire in the summer and that has led to increased speculation about where he may end up, with a number of clubs reportedly interested in his services.

United are the latest name to be added to that list, with any potential move for Ings likely to be as a replacement for Robin van Persie, who the Daily Mail claim United are keen to get rid of.

So would Ings be a suitable replacement for the Dutchman? We compare their stats from this season to find out.

In the goals column, Van Persie leads the way with 10 goals compared to Ings’ nine, while his shooting accuracy is also higher, having registered 31 on target attempts out of 65, a success rate of 47%.

In contrast, Ings has just 26 shots on target out of 77, a success percentage of just 33%. Van Persie has also scored more big chances than Ings, eight compared to six, although he has also missed more big chances, with a tally of eight compared to six again.

Ings doesn’t trail in all categories, though, having registered four assists this season, while his attempted assist success rate is also higher, with 25 of 31 attempted assists on target, a success rate of 80%.

In contrast, Van Persie has just two assists to his name while he just 13 of his 24 attempted assists have been on target, a success rate of 54%.

Not much to choose between the two players then. Considering Ings has remained close while playing for a team fighting relegation, and he definitely has the potential to replace Van Persie at Old Trafford.

Whether or not United make a move for his services however, remains to be seen.
