Tottenham Hotspur defender Vlad Chiriches endured a disappointing afternoon as he vastly underperformed during his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa.
The Romanian international was recalled to the side by boss Mauricio Pochettino as regular right-back Kyle Walker missed the Villa clash through injury.
With the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular spot in the absence of Walker, Chiriches in contrast only hindered his chances of working his way into Pochettino’s plans with a wretched display.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the 25-year-old lost out in the key battles and was largely at fault for Villa striker Christian Benteke scoring the only goal of the game.
Aside from his key blunder at the back, Chiriches failed to register a single tackle or interception during the 79 minutes he was on the pitch.
Moreover, he won only three of eight defensive duels and just one of five aerial battles as he struggled to contain Belgian international Benteke and strike partner Gabby Agbonlahor.
To top off a miserable afternoon, the former Steaua Bucharest man often failed to get the basics right, completing just 74.6% of his intended passes – among his side’s worst tallies.
Chiriches didn’t arrive in North London cheaply, and his performances over the past two years haven’t lived up to his initial promise, prompting plenty of talk among fans of a possible exit this summer.
The defeat leaves the Lillywhites in seventh spot in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of Manchester City in fourth with defeat all-but ending their slim chances of Champions League qualification.
