Saints supporters took to social media to comment on their skipper's display against Steve Bruce's men.

Southampton fans were delighted with captain Jose Fonte's performance against Hull City at St Mary's on Saturday afternoon.

Ronald Koeman's side bounced back from their 1-0 defeat at Everton with a 2-0 victory over the Tigers and, at the heart of their defence, Fonte was key to their fortunes.

The 31-year-old starred as Southampton moved back into fifth place in the Premier League and supporters didn't fail to notice his contribution for the Saints.

Toby Alderweireld 3 1 7 3 90
Jose Fonte 2 3 6 0 90
Morgan Schneiderlin 2 3 2 0 90
James Ward-Prowse 2 0 0 0 45
Ryan Bertrand 1 2 4 3 90

As Opta stats show, Fonte delivered a solid all-round performance at the back - along with Toby Alderweireld.

With two tackles won and three interceptions, Fonte also impressed in the clearances department. The fact that he didn't win any headers, meanwhile, is rendered futile by another key fact: he didn't need to.

But Southampton fans were just as impressed - if not more so - with the Portuguese defender's leadership off the ball as his footballing ability against Hull.

Indeed, the 31-year-old's handling of the Southampton penalty situation, when he made sure it went to eventual scorer James Ward-Prowse but also consoled Sadio Mane, absolutely delighted Saints supporters.

Here's what they made of Fonte's display v Hull on Twitter after the game!
