The former Liverpool man has praised the England midfielder following United's win over Manchester City.
Louis Van Gaal’s side were 4-1 winners in the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon, coming back from an early Sergio Aguero goal to dominate the game and move further ahead of their rivals in the table.
Goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling saw United to the crucial victory but Souness was full of praise for midfielder Carrick and the role he played in the game.
“I thought he was fabulous today,” said Souness.
“Every touch of the ball he’s taking it away from someone who’s trying to mark him, he’s fluid and makes things look easy.”
Midfielder Carrick has come in for praise from all corners this season, with stats showing his side have won a significantly higher percentage of their games with him in the side than without him.
The types of performances he has put in this season have made him a vital part of the United midfield, with him playing the role of protecting the defence but also helping to keep his side in possession and on the attack.
He has however been criticised for not being aggressive enough, or scoring enough goals, although Souness isn’t interested in that instead highlighting the player’s desire to keep the ball moving as vital to the victory.
“Today it was a near perfect performance from a central midfield player,” he added.
“He positioned himself in front of the back four and stopped the ball being played in there. When he got on the ball he just kept it moving all the time, he didn’t dwell on it”
