Report: Celtic sent scouts to watch Benfica this weekend

So who could Celtic have been keeping their eyes on.

According to a report in Portuguese media source Relvado Sapo Celtic reportedly sent scouts to check out Benfica taking on Academica at the Estadio Da Luz.

The report claims that Celtic had delegates in Lisbon along with Hamburg SV, Valencia, Sassuolo and Reading.

Celtic are clearly getting themselves ready for the next season and the summer transfer market, and will have to keep their eyes out for bargains. With that in mind, the likelihood is that Benfica players, usually a quite expensive pedigree, were not their targets.

Academica's players would certainly be far more affordable for Celtic.

The Coimbra based club have some interesting prospects in their team that were on show last night.

There is Joao Real, a bullish defender. There is Rafael Lopes. The forward scored in the game and is a Portuguese youth international. They might have been looking at Ghanaian Richard Ofori.

Who knows who they were checking out, but one thing that is for sure is that they were probably not impressed with what they saw.

Benfica thrashed Academica 5-1 and while Celtic would love to sign the likes of Nico Gaitan, Jonas and Lima - they might be slightly out of their price range.
