Paul Merson dismissive of Newcastle and buoyant about Liverpool

Liverpool face Newcastle on Monday night.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has told SkySports he believes Liverpool will run out comfortable winners against Newcastle United.

The two teams face off on Monday Night Football, both needing wins to turn around recent poor form in the Premier League.

Merson has predicted a 2-0 win for Liverpool and expects the game could be the start of a streak of victories, with Manchester City in their sights for to overtake for a fourth place spot.

He said: "It’s a big football match for Liverpool – they need to get back on that winning run. They have the potential to win five on the trot."

About their opponents he was far more dismissive, commenting: "When was the last time Newcastle won a football match? It seems like they have been on 35 points for months and months. They’ve just lost a local derby and then they have to go to Liverpool."

The answer to Merson's question was February 28th, when Newcastle beat Aston Villa 1-0 at St James' Park.

It is just one of two Premier League games the club have won under the management of John Carver, and the club have lost four consecutive games.

Liverpool have themselves lost their last two Premier League matches, but will have picked up confidence from an FA Cup quarter-final replay win in midweek.

Merson's 2-0 prediction is quite a conservative one given Newcastle's poor run, and it would not be a surprise if they were to end up winning by twice that margin.
