Arsenal boss hails the impact former outcast Francis Coquelin has had on the first-team

Francis Coquelin has been in fantastic form for the club in recent weeks.

Arsenal won 1-0 against Burnley yesterday in a game that they needed to show off some of their more recently acquired defensive qualities.

Much of that form has come from Francis Coquelin

The Frenchman has performed a fantastic turnaround to his Arsenal career.

Last season he was terrible for SC Freiburg, but spent most of his time on the left wing in the Bundesliga. He recently excelled in the heart of Charlton Athletic's midfield and was subsequently called back from his spell in the Championship to add some steel to Arsenal's midfield.

He has been fantastic since returning and is now the go-to holding midfielder for Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger spoke to the official club website after the game about the French dynamo, stating:

"First of all he’s shown his individual quality winning the ball and passing it quickly, and he’s very strong in the challenges. He also contributes to the balance of the team and that’s very difficult to measure.

"You know that the balance of the team sometimes depends on one player who has some characteristics that the others don’t. He looks like he has hugely contributed to that."

Coquelin's energy and defensive mind have truly helped add some balance to the free-flowing Arsenal midfield. While the more creative players go forward and try to create goals, Coquelin is happy to do the dirty work - like a younger, faster, Mathieu Flamini.

His influence on the team's recent run of form can simply not be underestimated and right now, he must be one of the first names on the Arsenal team-sheet.
