James Vaughan had the first chance of the game in the seventh minute with a header, but he failed to keep it on target.
Jacob Butterfield came close for the visitors twice and so did Nahki Wells, while Chuba Akpom and Michael Mancienne had chances for Forest before the half-hour mark.
Michail Antonio had two chances in quick succession for the Reds, but it was Huddersfield who took the lead in the 43rd minute when Sean Scannell found the target after latching onto a through-ball from Jacob Butterfield.
Forest had a good chance 10 minutes into the second half when Chris Burke made an attempt from outside the box.
Tyler Walker saw his wonderful attempt on 70 minutes saved by the Huddersfield goalkeeper, before Burke came close twice.
The result means that Forest are now without a win in three Championship matches.
