And there's no rocket science behind his theory. Indeed, that reason is the form of Christian Benteke.
The Belgian struggled for goals before Sherwood's arrival at Aston Villa but now can't seem to stop scoring.
He netted again at Tottenham on Saturday - the only goal of the game at White Hart Lane as Villa won 1-0 - despite the presence of Federico Fazio, brought in specifically by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to deal with the aerial threat of Benteke.
The 'shackles' are off the striker now, according to Sherwood, and that's exactly why Aston Villa are doing so well and won at Tottenham, he argues.
The Villa boss said: "The club weren't creating chances for Christian Benteke before I arrived. It's about conserving his energy, keeping him high up the field and using him to penetrate teams. The shackles are off him now.
"It's a fantastic result for me and Aston Villa."
The Tottenham win now puts Sherwood's side up to 15th in the Premier League, with top-flight safety very close indeed for the Midlands side.
Aston Villa are six points clear of the bottom three with six games to go. Spurs, however, are facing a very dreary end to the season indeed...
