Djibil Cisse has scored three times as Bastia reached the Coupe de la Ligue final, but he has been dropped from today's squad.
Former Liverpool and Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse has had to endure quite a difficult season in France. Injuries have all but finished his career, with comments a few months ago suggesting that he was in a constant state of pain from his hip.
However, things have gone from bad to worse for the Champions League winner. Despite being the top scorer in the competition, Cisse has been left out of Bastia’s squad for the match against Paris Saint-Germain in the Stade de France.
It would have possibly been a fitting end to his career if the former France international had been allowed maybe just a fleeting late substitute appearance, but his place in the squad has been handed to returning Brazilian striker Brandao.
The former Saint-Etienne forward was banned for six months after he head-butted PSG midfielder Thiago Motta. There was a chance that he would miss out and Cisse would make the squad, but the striker has confirmed via twitter of his exclusion.
Pas ds le groupe pour la finale une decision qui me fait bcp de mal et a mes proches gagnons ce match pour le peuple corse #FORZABASTIA— djibril cisse (@DjibrilCisse) April 11, 2015
Basically saying he has not been included in the squad and it makes him feel bad, but his team want to win the trophy for the people of Corsica. He then went on to tweet a picture proving he is the top scorer in the competition.
It is a sad end to Cisse’s season, and perhaps his career. The 33-year-old has only made six appearances in the league, with all of them coming off the bench. His goals in the Coupe de la Ligue are the only time he has found the back of the net this season.
Now, the former Liverpool man will have to cheer his teammates on from the stands.
