On Saturday evening, the first silverware of the season will be decided in France and it hands an opportunity for former Arsenal defensive flop, Sebastien Squillaci, to turn himself into a cup hero – although it won’t be easy.
Corsican club Bastia take on holders Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade de France, and although they won the last league meeting 4-2 at the Stade Armand Cesari, they have conceded four goals to the Parisian club this season.
Squillaci will be up against a PSG front-line that will definitely include Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and he will be backed up by two of Javier Pastore, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani.
There are some huge battles across the pitch, but one of the biggest will be how the former Arsenal, Monaco and Lyon man deals with the Swedish talisman.
Ibrahimovic – who starts a four-match ban on Tuesday – scored a hat-trick as PSG qualified for the final of the Coupe de France. He knows he has a few weeks rest after this game, so you can imagine he will put everything into this contest on Saturday.
When Squillaci has been on the pitch, Bastia have only conceded 22 times during his 24 appearances. They may have started the season slowly under former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele, but the islanders have turned it around.
Beating Monaco on penalties to reach the final was a huge achievement, and now with Squillaci keeping them solid at the back, they have the chance to avenge the 1995 cup defeat…to PSG. That would put the French defender in the history books of this passionate club.
