Arsenal and Manchester United-linked Cavani in last chance saloon

Cavani

Edinson Cavani may be dropped by PSG for today's Coupe de la Ligue final.

It has been a strange 12 months for Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani. In last season’s Coupe de la Ligue final he was the hero – scoring twice against Lyon – now, with rumours – from the Daily Star - persisting of a possible move to either Arsenal of Manchester United in the summer, he is not even guaranteed a starting place in Paris Saint-Germain’s line-up.

On Saturday morning, French newspaper L’Equipe post their probable line-ups for the game and they are suggesting that the former Napoli man could start on the bench for the cup holders, with Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore playing either side of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Although the English clubs have seemed obsessed with Cavani ever since he moved to Paris, his goal return has been somewhat of a disappointment and now, without a goal in over 600 league minutes, the pressure is starting to build on him to perform.

L’Equipe suggested this week that only one of Cavani and Ibrahimovic would be at the club next season. After Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick on Wednesday and with Cavani’s poor form taken into account, there looks to be only one outcome.

The four-match ban handed to the Swedish striker will give Cavani ample opportunity to show what he can still provide as a striker. However, Laurent Blanc will be more interested in what he can achieve playing beside Ibrahimovic rather than when he fills in for the 33-year-old.

Saturday could be one of the last chances for Cavani to show that he is the big time player PSG need him to be. If he can play a part and help PSG lift the Coupe de la Ligue trophy, it may not save his career in Paris, but it could spark further interest from Premier League clubs in the summer.
