Ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson names his combined Manchester United and Manchester City XI

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has left out Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini from his combined Manchester United and Manchester City XI.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has compiled his ideal Manchester United and Manchester City XI for Sky Sports.

In goal, Merson has given the nod to United’s David de Gea ahead of City and England international Joe Hart.

No surprises there.

At right-back, Merson has chosen Argentina international Pablo Zabaleta, and at left-back, it is United’s Luke Shaw.

Vincent Kompany and Phil Jones are the two centre-backs in Merson’s team, while Michael Carrick is deployed in the defensive midfield role.

James Milner and David Silva are the two wide players, while Spain international Juan Mata is deployed just behind the two strikers, Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney.

The two most notable players who have been left out of the team are Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

Both are in good form at the moment and have established themselves as important players in United’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season.

Paul Merson’s Combined XI (4-1-2-1-2): David De Gea; Luke Shaw, Vincent Kompany, Phil Jones, Pablo Zabaleta; Michael Carrick; David Silva, James Milner; Juan Mata; Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney
