Why Christian Benteke would be a fine summer signing for Spurs

The Aston Villa forward has returned to form and then some in recent weeks, and would be superb addition to Tottenham's strike force.

Tottenham should consider going back in for Christian Benteke this summer, a player they have chased in each of the last two seasons according to the Mirror, with the striker single-handedly pulling Aston Villa away from the relegation zone.

The 24-year-old has returned to form in extraordinary fashion in recent weeks, and is once more looking like a feared Premier League target man.

It is true that Benteke's performances have been somewhat temperamental this season, having scored just three goals before March.

But there is some evidence that this record is likely down to injury, suspensions and former Villa boss Paul Lambert's negative attacking attitude, after the powerful Belgian has more than proved since Tim Sherwood took over at the Midlands outfit that he is still more than capable of finding the back of the net regularly in the English top flight.

In fact, no other player has more goals to his name since March 1 than the Aston Villa star.

Olivier Giroud FW Arsenal 6 1 30% 5 450
Harry Kane FW Tottenham 5 0 29.42% 5 436

The forward has seven goals and 1 assist to his name in that time, despite playing fewer minutes than North London duo Olivier Giroud and Harry Kane. Benteke is also currently boasting an astonishing shots to goals percentage of 63%.

Benteke's availability would likely depend on the mooted takeover talks that are going on at Villa Park, as well as whether whoever is in charge over the summer will consider selling the former Genk striker in order to bring in some funds to strengthen other areas of the team.

However, considering Tottenham's rumoured chasing of the striker in the past, with reports of a transfer request at one point in order to push through a move, as well as the North London side's Belgian contingent, they would do well to recruit a player that caused them huge problems in the 2-1 earlier in the season, and will be hoping to do the same at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
