Dutch international Memphis Depay has been told to snub a move away from PSV Eindhoven in the summer by Southampton winger Eljero Elia.
The Saints midfielder, who has scored two goals in 10 appearances since joining the club in January, has warned his international teammate that a move away from PSV would be a bad decision.
The 28-year-old told Voetbal International, as quoted by talkSPORT: ‘’I think it will be best for him to stay at Eindhoven.
‘’My feeling is he should play in the Champions League for PSV then he would have the experience of playing at the highest level in his locker before the moves at 22.
‘’PSV don’t need the money and I feel Memphis doesn’t need it as he signed a nice contract recently.’’
The 21-year-old, who has scored 24 goals in 31 appearances for the league leaders this season, has earned the plaudits for his performances since his return from the World Cup and looks a good bet to walk away with Eredivisie Player of the Year award once the season has finished.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have not ignored the youngster’s progress this season and will make him the subject of a summer transfer bid once the window opens at the end of the current season.
Louis van Gaal, who took the player to the World Cup last summer, is said to be a big admirer of the diminutive attacker’s talents and could look to make him a key part of a potential title push next season.
In his current form, no one can deny that he has a lot to offer United and their ambition to become Premier League champions, but Elia makes a very good point.
A move too soon could be detrimental to his progression, so he should continue to work hard on scoring goals and enjoying his football with the Dutch club, especially as Champions League football awaits him next season.
