The Schalke defender has expressed a desire to play in the Premier League.
Tottenham are being linked with a move for Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes today. A report in SportBild, as quoted by The Metro, claims that the German international, who helped his nation to a World cup victory last summer, is available for just €18 million this upcoming summer and that spurs would be willing to pay the price.
Howedes is one of the most consistent performers in the Bundesliga and Tottenham need a new central defender. The likes of Federico Fazio and Vlad Chiriches have not worked out for Spurs and a fresh face is needed.
Despite recent reports that Kevin Wimmer of Bundesliga rivals FC Koln would be that man, this latest development would cast doubt over the Austrian’s move – which Wimmer dubbed a dream earlier in the week, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Howedes has already revealed he would happily head to the Premier League. He was quoted by the Express in February as stating:
"I believe that if I leave the club it won't be to remain in this league. I can imagine going abroad to gain a new experience and I think England is possibly my next destination."
The centre-back, who can play at full-back in emergencies, has played in 32 games this season and has netted three goals. But after nearly 16 years with the German side it looks like he could be ready for a change of scenery, with Tottenham a potential destination.
