New multi-franchise, interactive Lego game to be released in September.
Back in January we reported that Nexon Korea would be working with Warner Bros Interactive and TT Games to create a new Lego RPG that would take in many of Lego's famous franchise', today it was announced that the game would be called Lego Dimensions although interestingly Nexon Korea haven't been named on the developers list.
Lego Dimensions will be a brand new concept for Lego games and gaming as a whole. The game will take in many of their big franchised brands including DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, Ninjago, Back to the Future, The Lego Movie, Wizard of Oz and many more still to be announced. Will we see a coming together of DC and Marvel super heroes in the game? There's no mention of Marvel yet but don't count it out.
The game's main protagonists will be Batman, Gandalf and Wildstyle although the game will allow players to utilise a number of special characters using the Lego Toy Pad, an external portal that allows players to transport minifigures into the game. The starter pack will come with the Lego Toy Pad and three minifigures, Batman, Gandalf and Wildstyle as well as the iconic Lego Batmobile.
“When kids play with LEGO bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favourite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games,” said Jon Burton, Founder and Creative Director, TT Games. “Now for the first time in a videogame, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO Delorean in New Ninjago City - the creative play is endless.”
A launch trailer featuring Joel McHale (Community, Ted, Spider-Man 2) has been released that gives Lego fans a better idea of what to expect from the game. You can view the trailer below.
Perhaps the cleverest part of Lego's vision for this game is the addition of physical Lego packs that players will be able to buy. Altering the concept of DLC by giving the player physical expansions for the game. 2015 will see the release of a Back to the Future level pack complete with Marty McFly minifigure, A Lego Ninjago team pack with Kai & Cole minifigures, three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with Gollum, Gimli and Legolas minifigures, four The Lego Movie Fun packs with Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters, and a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a Wicked Witch of the West minifigure. Additional packs will be announced in the months leading to launch. Further waves of expansion packs will be released regularly following the launch of the game and into 2016.
This is looking like the most accomplished Lego vision to date and we can't wait to give it a go.
Lego Dimensions will be released on 29th September 2015 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3 and Nintendo WiiU.
