Arsenal legend Martin Keown has written in The Daily Mail that that Gareth Bale needs to step up for Real Madrid.
Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Bale has come in for some harsh criticisms of late for his underwhelming performances for Madrid.
Although the 25-year-old has scored 13 goals and created 41 chances in 27 La Liga appearances so far this season, he has not exactly been in scintillating or consistent form.
Former Arsenal star Keown has now suggested that the main reason why Bale does not always get his due recognition is because of the presence of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo in the Madrid team.
“It all looks very easy for him (Ronaldo) at the moment,” Keown wrote in The Daily Mail. “The whole team is geared towards him and it must be tough to be an attacking team-mate of his when he dominates the scoring like he does.
“I feel for Gareth Bale, he’s got lots of quality but needs to show more determination to be the main man. It’s a similar story for Karim Benzema, who often has to force goals to get in on the action and sometimes that leads to him shooting when he should pass.”
Ronaldo is one of the two best players in the world, and he does indeed play the central figure at Madrid.
However, when the Portugal international forward was recently going through a bad spell, Bale failed to step up and make himself the central figure.
The former Tottenham star remains a hugely important player for Madrid, but the problem at Madrid if that the fans demand and expect loads of him, perhaps more than they should.
The Madrid fans want to see breathtaking football which wins games with ease, but that is not always possible.
However, with the season now at its business end, perhaps Bale will step up him and help Madrid win La Liga and the Champions League.
