Report: Nicola Salerno resigns from position at Leeds United

An update on the future of Leeds United's Nicola Salerno.

Leeds United sporting director Nicola Salerno has resigned from his position at the club, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The paper cites a source particularly close to the situation - owner Massimo Cellino.

It does not state whether the club have accepted his resignation, and nor is there any official news on his future.

Salerno took the decision to suspend assistant manager Steve Thompson last week, as reported by The Guardian, a move which caused a huge backlash which he clearly may have underestimated.

The Times reported today that Salerno's future is 'hanging by a thread', and he did not attend either of Leeds United's matches over the Easter period.

If he has left the club as is reported, Thompson's role could yet come back under review, which would also help head coach Neil Redfearn's case for a new deal, and his desire to stay at Leeds.

Redfearn was reported by The Mirror to be considering his future after Thompson's removal as his assistant.

Owner Massimo Cellino is due to return from his Football League suspension next month.
