Report: Everton planning move for former Liverpool midfielder

Everton are reportedly keen on signing former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles.

As published by the Liverpool Echo, the Toffees are keen on signing Turkish star Meireles, who has been playing for Fenerbahce since 2012.

Formerly of Liverpool and Chelsea, the 32-year-old midfielder has just a year left on his contract in the Turkish Super Lig, and Fenerbahce could be pressed to sell him to ensure they receive some fee for him rather than losing him on a free transfer next season.

Having totalled over 100 appearances for Liverpool and Chelsea combined, the Portuguese international departed England with an FA Cup and Champions League title to his name - both won with the Blues.

The report also states that West Ham have been linked with a move for the midfielder, who could be tempted to return to England for the final stage of his career.

Should Everton sign Meireles?

Despite ageing and being in the latter stage of his career, Meireles certainly still has a few years left of top flight football in him. A well known goalscorer and energetic midfield presence, he would add a drive to the middle of the park that the Toffees have been lacking this season.

However, due to his age, signing him would be nothing but a short-term fix for some evident problems, and that does not tie in with the building process wanted at a club with ambitions for Premier League success. They should be looking to sign a player who can help the club for many years, rather than one looking for a final pay-day with one or two seasons of football left in him.
