Arsenal’s under-21s took on their Stoke equivalents last night in a fixture at The Emirates Stadium. It was an important day for young striker Alex Iwobi, who netted a hat-trick in a 4-1 win. It was also an important day for several Arsenal first-teamers, back in action at the Emirates.
Much was made of the fact that Arsenal currently had a seemingly full-fit squad, until Wojciech Szczesny injured his ribs, for the game with Liverpool at the weekend.
Because they have a horrid record with injuries and the likes of Jack Wilshere, Serge Gnabry and Abou Diaby have been in and out of the treatment room recently. Mikel Arteta, club captain, has also been waylaid with an ankle injury.
But all four were in action last night.
Arteta and Wilshere, who have both been out since ankle surgery in November, will hope to play again before the end of the month.
Diaby’s latest injury in a long bout of problems was a calf strain. He has not featured for the first-team since September.
Gnabry has been out of first-team action for over a year, but has been sporadically playing with the under-21s for a number of months now.
It was good to see them all back playing at The Emirates. Arsenal fans will now be hoping they can do so with the first-team in the not so distant future.
