Liverpool round-up, Reds linked with Rui Patricio, backing for Mignolet and FA Cup build-up

Simon Mignolet

A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Liverpool Football Club this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper according to the Daily Mirror, as Brendan Rodgers is said to want more competition for current number one Simon Mignolet.

The Mirror links the Reds with a move for Sporting Lisbon's Rui Patricio, a 27-year-old who has played in the Champions League this season against Chelsea, with Brad Jones's contract set to expire in the summer.

However, defender Kolo Toure is quoted in the Liverpool Echo suggesting Mignolet could be the club's number one goalkeeper for many years to come.

Toure has been impressed by the turnaround in form from the Belgian that saw him left out of the side for a spell in December, but now in the race for the Premier League's golden glove after several clean sheets.

The Ivorian defender said: “He has proved he’s the No 1 and he can be here at Liverpool for many years.

“Not only does he make big saves but he’s also not scared of taking responsibility and coming to take the ball from crosses.

“It’s amazing when you have a goalkeeper like that who commands his box. His form has been great and I’m really pleased for Simon. We need to help him by defending well in front of him.”

The Reds are in FA Cup action tonight as they look to win their first trophy under Brendan Rodgers when they take on Blackburn Rovers in a quarter-final replay.

The Liverpool manager has warned the side to tighten up after a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League, and he's quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “First of all we didn’t defend the ball well enough, we gave the ball away in poor areas for two of the four goals.

“Over the last few months we defended really well, we had six clean sheets against good opponents and defended very well away from home."

The Mirror reports that Adam Lallana will miss tonight's game because of a groin injury.
