Leeds United youngster Kalvin Phillips revealed in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds what experienced Wolves star Kevin McDonald told him after his debut for the club.
Phillips was a surprise starter for the match earlier this week, which Leeds lost 4-3 after a spirited second half performance, which saw them dominate long periods of the game.
Phillips played well on his first senior start for Leeds, showing authority in midfield and choosing McDonald as one of the opponents to physically compete against with some strong challenges, leaving the Wolves man impressed by the physicality of the youngster.
“I was not really fussed about it, to be honest. I spoke to him after the game and he said it was a great tackle. I just caught him afterwards,” said Phillips.
Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn now has a big challenge on his hands to keep the midfielder grounded and focused on how he can build on his first start for the club.
He’s another very good example of the strength, which currently exists in the youth system at Elland Road and Redfearn needs to work hard with the player to refine his game and develop various aspects of his skill set.
With the pressure off of Leeds, the manager can start to take a few more risks over the rest of the season and Phillips is a player who should enjoy an extended run of games, which will allow him to build up his experience.
Next up for Leeds is a game against Cardiff City, with Russell Slade’s team one place ahead of Leeds but on the same number of points.
