How Barcelona's reported interest in John Stones is good news for England, but bad news for Everton

The England international was reportedly on the radar of Barcelona in the summer.

Today saw the Daily Mail report that Barcelona were keen on signing Everton defender John Stones in the summer transfer window.

They report that before signing Jeremy Mathieu and Tomas Vermaelen to plug their centre back chasm it was Stones they wanted.

Which is great news for English football, not so much Everton.

Every now and again the odd English attacking player has the talent and mercurial ability to mix it with the best in Europe. Not many defenders have the style to play in a league like La Liga.

Stones is one of the exceptions.

The England international enjoys having the ball at his feet. While he is not afraid to do the dirty stuff, he is equally adept at getting the ball under control and playing out from the back.

He has suffered with injuries this season and there is no doubt that Everton have missed him greatly when he is not around.

The worry here is if Barcelona come back for him. He would be foolish to turn down their advances and, eventually, Barca would pay the price.

But on the other hand it would be great to have an Englishman at the heart of defence for the Catalan giants.
