Inter Milan's international star would be an excellent Bosman signing for Tottenham when his contract expires this summer.
Inter captain Andrea Ranocchia is possibly the highest profile central defender whose contract is set to expire this summer, and for that reason, Tottenham, with the worst defensive record in the top 12 Premier League teams, should be doing everything they can to recruit him.
Central defence has been up in the air at White Hart Lane this season, with several players partnering Jan Vertonghen at the back, but there has been little evidence of it being shored up in any way.
So with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, himself a former centre back, surely considering reinforcements, it would be foolish not to cast a glance at Italy international Ranocchia, who featured in the recent 1-1 draw against England.
Despite discussions going on for much of the season, with plenty of talk coming out of the San Siro that the 27-year-old is going to sign a contract extension, Ranocchia's deal is still set to expire this summer.
Of course, it will take some offer to tempt Ranocchia into leaving Inter the season after he has been made captain at the club, but with the Nerazzurri in 9th position and continuing to struggle to ascend the Serie A table, and looking like missing out a place in the Europa League, let alone the Champions League, for next season, the giant Italian could be tempted into a switch to the lucrative Premier League.
Federico Fazio has at times proved the value of having a tall, powerful centre back who is good in the air in the middle of the back four, and with Ranocchia being the same size but a more mobile option than the Argentine, it is possible that Pochettino can tweak what has been a major problem area for Spurs.
With Ranocchia having cost a hefty fee when he joined Inter from Genoa in 2011, it would be some coup if Spurs did identify him as a defensive option, and they would be able to spend big in any contract negotiations for the player.
