The Hammers have dropped off in form since January, and Cottee has told London24 which players should be setting themselves what targets.
“I think West Ham’s players and the team as a whole need to set themselves targets too,” Cottee said. “Diafra Sakho must try and score as many goals as he can. The defence and the keeper need to keep as many clean sheets as they can.
“As a team, they need to make sure that they do not drop out of that top 10. That was the target for the season but with Crystal Palace and Everton starting to close in, there is a chance that they could miss that target which would make it a disappointing season, especially after that start.”
Having been inside the top four around the festive period, and with impressive victories over Manchester City and Liverpool to their name, many expected the Hammers to seriously challenge for at least a Europa League place.
However, with Premier League survival secured, the players have seemingly dropped off in form, and they have registered just one win since January - resulting in them almost dropping out of the top 10.
At the start of the season such a placing would have been a success, but to be there now after such a good start is fairly poor. It appears as if the players have nothing to play for, despite the chances of securing a top placing in the Premier League, and Cottee is right to see the players setting targets for themselves.
With the club aiming for nothing, the players are likely to relax, and so they should set themselves personal targets to ensure their commitment levels do not drop even further before the end of the campaign.
