The Germany star says he is pleased with his overall performance levels, despite a poor start to the campaign.
The German returned from his country’s successful World Cup campaign and suffered an indifferent start to the campaign, coming in for criticism from fans and pundits alike.
However, he and his side have picked up form over the last few months and find themselves second in the table, just seven points off leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand.
They are also arguably the Premier League’s most in-form side and Mertesacker has said he is pleased with the season overall and his performances on the whole, despite the Gunners’ disappointing exit to Monaco in the Champions League.
“I’m pretty delighted with my performances due to the fact I came back very, very late after the World Cup,” he said.
“This season was pretty difficult but I’m pretty delighted how it went and how the team is responding to all the criticism that has came and is coming our way because it is a complete new experience for a lot of the players.”
The defender has also praised the manner in which the side have responded to the criticism that has come their way across the season, especially as it was a new experience for the majority of the side.
He has also given credit to the manager and the fans for their understanding across the campaign, saying it has helped them to turn things around and be in the position they currently occupy.
“It was a new experience but our team has been absolutely amazing this season,” added Mertesacker.
“The support was so amazing. It’s easier when you receive understanding from the manager and fans, and we are in a good position now.”
