Derby County secured a much needed win on Easter Monday with a 2-0 victory over Wigan thanks to goals from strikers Chris Martin and Darren Bent.
Martin is back in action with a bang following a hamstring problem, with the Rams having missed his consistency in terms of hitting the back of the net over the last few weeks, as the team fight to consolidate in the top six.
Martin has now scored 20 goals in all competitions for the side this season and his aim should be to reach at least that figure in Championship goals alone, which would mark a wonderful season for him considering his recent spell out of the side with injury.
His performance alongside Bent was also a big indication to Steve McClaren that the Rams are at their very best with that duo up front, patrolling the attack and playing off of each other to give the opposition defence some problems.
Martin is very effective dropping off from the front of the side, looking for the ball before passing it on or turning to attack. He can also change with Bent and play on the shoulder of the defence if the Aston Villa owned man is under pressure.
Bent is most effective when he’s right on top of a defence, smothering them and looking for space to exploit in behind or space where he can get into a good position to get on the end of a chance coming in.
Next up for the Rams is a mouth-watering clash against Brentford this weekend, with the Bees two places below Derby in the table, but just one point behind as the battle for a play-off place by the end of the season intensifies.
Here’s what Derby fans on Twitter had to say about Martin’s performance.
Then we can sign Bent, who will also be a free. Martin and Bent, 2 of the best championship strikers, both free. Unreal!— Luke Siddalls (@Luke_DCFC) April 6, 2015
Wigan dominated 1st half and I feared another one of them days. Martin on changed the game. That said grant made some good stops! #DCFC— Sy (@5IMON_) April 6, 2015
