The former Tottenham striker scored a wonderful volley in the Tyne-Wear derby yesterday.
Sunderland took on Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby yesterday, as The Black Cats once again conquered their nearest rivals. They continued their dominance over The Toon in recent years in a close fought 1-0 victory, thanks mainly to a wonderstrike from Jermain Defoe.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker showed he has lost none of his predatory insitinct during a difficult spell with Toronto FC by firing home a wonderful left-foot volley from the edge of the box.
It rendered Newcastle keeper Tim Krul useless, and the Dutchman even stuck around to congratulate the Englishman on his strike at half-time.
It also caused quite a stir on Twitter. Players and ex-players were floored by the effort. Pros from clubs such as Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Bournemouth, Reading, Liverpool, Manchester City – as well as a couple of Tottenham talents – all took to the social network site immediately after his strike hit the back of the net.
Former players Darren Anderton, Andy Cole and Phil Neville also reacted.

Not only was it a great goal, it was an important one. Sunderland have now moved to 29 points and are 15th in the league table as their battle for Premier League survival trundles on.
