Former Aston Villa and Liverpool forward Stan Collymore made a prediction over Arsenal forward Theo Walcott during a question and answer session for talkSPORT yesterday.
Collymore suggested that Walcott had greater potential over the next couple of seasons, than a player Arsenal have been tipped to sign; Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.
“I genuinely believe that Theo Walcott will be more productive than Raheem Sterling in the next two years,” said Collymore.
The claim is an interesting one considering Sterling is one of Liverpool’s key attacking players while Walcott has struggled to break into the Arsenal first team in the last few weeks.
Walcott was an unused sub in the 4-1 win Arsenal achieved over Liverpool during the Easter weekend, while Sterling played a full 90 minutes without getting on the score sheet.
Walcott does have the edge in terms of experience and if he can get his contract situation sorted out quickly, he can focus on becoming a key player and starter for Arsene Wenger looking ahead to next season.
Sterling also has his own contract situation to sort out, with the Daily Mail suggesting that a straight up swap involving the two players could well be on the cards.
Sterling hasn’t been at his best since the turn of the year, but the main difference is he’s starting and is being given the chance to influence big games from the start and it will be interesting to see how Walcott approaches getting off the bench at the Gunners.
