Tottenham Hotspur failed to make a winning return to Premier League action following the two-week international break on Sunday, as they were held to a goalless draw by Burnley away from home.
Spurs headed into the game at Turf Moor on the back of a 4-3 victory over Leicester City at White Hart Lane and were expected by many to pick up the three points.
However, the North London outfit’s performance against relegation-threatened Burnley left much to be desired, and they had to settle for a point.
Over the course of 90 minutes, Mauricio Pochettino’s side had 60% of the possession, took 12 shots of which only two were on target, and earned just three corners.
It was one of the most boring games in the Premier League this season, and the final outcome was a blow to Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top four.
Spurs are now sixth in the Premier League table with 54 points from 31 matches, as many as seven points behind defending champions Manchester City, who are fourth and have a game in hand.
The goalless draw at Burnley came as a disappointment to the Tottenham players, with midfielder Ryan Mason summing up the mood on social networking site Twitter:
Disappointing performance & result today! Fans were great again and thanks for travelling up to support us! COYS— Ryan Mason (@Ryan_Mason13) April 5, 2015
