Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has explained to the club’s website he feels that winning the FA Cup would save the side’s season.
Liverpool take on Blackburn Rovers in their FA Cup replay this week, with the competition representing the side’s only chance to win some silverware this season.
“Winning the cup would save our season. It is very important for us to have that as an objective,” said Coutinho.
“We have to pick ourselves up after what happened against Arsenal to get the results that we need.”
The FA Cup is a competition where Liverpool have played well throughout the season so far.
The Reds need to react positively against Blackburn, because they were torn apart by the creative and attacking talent that Arsenal have over the weekend.
The FA Cup is one of the most historic cup tournaments around the world and it would be a fitting way for Steven Gerrard to sign off at the club.
Gerrard announced earlier this season that he wouldn’t be renewing his contract and lifting a trophy at Wembley would be a fitting conclusion to an impressive career.
Whether the FA Cup has the potential to save the club’s season may be a bit extreme, but it is valuable for Liverpool looking ahead to the summer and next season.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has done well to restructure the squad, but with the top four and Champions League football looking quite distant, there’s no harm in the side targeting some FA Cup glory.
